How do you know what is right and wrong?

Suppose you are standing by a railroad track. Ahead, in a deep cutting from which no escape is possible, five people are walking on the track. You hear a train approaching. Beside you is a lever with which you can switch the train to a sidetrack. One person is walking on the sidetrack. Is it O.K. to pull the lever and save the five people, though one will die?

Most people say it is.

Assume now you are on a bridge overlooking the track. Ahead, five people on the track are at risk. You can save them by throwing down a heavy object into the path of the approaching train. One is available beside you, in the form of a fat man. Is it O.K. to push him to save the five?

Most people say no, although lives saved and lost are the same as in the first problem.

  1. Very interesting, at this questions its hard to answer ,it depends by the thinking and life learning of every person in part, because you have 3 option to deal the mentioned problems above: A. pull the leaver,or push the fat guy, B. run away ,and avoid the problem and C.could be a solution to sacrifice yourself for the life of others?(i aspect a answer)...and not to forget, all mentioned solutions above will follow you all life thinking about that moment...except the last one..:p

  2. I think it is very interesting how ppl decide what is right and what is wrong. Offcourse it matters of how you were brought up. As you grow up though I think it is necessary that you use your own mind in deciding in even the rules you grew up in if they are right or wrong. I think you should search for your own truth and not let yourself manipulated by you parents or you grandparents religion and rules. Decide what you believe in and believe it with all your heart cause you discovered the truth behind it. That also goes with what is right or wrong. Decide for your self in the light of the Truth. 3. It´s extremely difficult to determine what is right and what is wrong. In the first example, if you decide to pull the lever you can save five people by killing one, but who can you assure that they are not rapists or killers? In that case, trying to do what is right you would have made a terrible mistake!

Well, I agree with the boy in the video who says: "I determine right from wrong if I´d do it with my mom in the room" jejeje :)
